Can I Ask for a Lower Sentence?
Absolutely. Asking for a lenient or lower sentence involves advocating for a Defendant using whatever mitigating information or evidence possible. That means that giving the court reasons why a judge should give a break. Maybe a Defendant has serious addiction issues and they were selling drugs to maintain a habit. Maybe a Defendant was sexually abused as a child, or suffered trauma that continues to affect their behavior. Maybe a Defendant is involved with their religious organization, does community service, or has sincere remorse. All of these and more can be reasons for a judge to give someone a break on sentencing.
